Cuminestown is a village of a little over 500 inhabitants in the centre of an extensive farming area of Aberdeenshire. New residential building is expected as soon as the present economic climate improves. There is a useful general store, and the nearest shopping centre beyond is Turriff (population 5000), some 6 miles away.

The village takes its name from Joseph Cumine of Auchry, who was a noted improver of agriculture in the 18th century. He founded it as an industrial settlement for the manufacture of textiles from raw materials produced locally. Cuminestown today has a number of flourishing small-scale industries.

The community is a lively one and, for a village of this size, boasts good sports facilities, a WRI and various clubs for leisure activities.
